Casal Velho is located in a region that has mainly agriculture and production forest.
Pombal, 4 km away , is a pleasant town with lots of culture. Cinema, theater, Bars with live performances, museums, the monthly saturday’s fleamarket and also the beautiful Castelo de Pombal with it’s trendy coffee bar where you can drink the most delicious coffees.
At the station of Pombal (fast trains to Oporto and Lisbon) also stops the hotel train to Spain.
The region is also great for cycling. By car you can make day trips to the reservoirs of the river Zezere and the Serra de Estrela. (Where you even can go skiing in the winter).
Very nice are also the Praia fluviais (river beaches). Without affecting the looks of the villages there is a part of the river rebuild to a swimming pool, with constantly clear water passing through. Often there is a bar or restaurant attached.
At a 25-minute drive are the barely explored beaches Praia de Osso de Baleia and Pedrógão Pequeno. Endless sandy beaches with spectacular waves of the Atlantic ocean.
Coimbra (at 40km), the oldest university town is also worth a visit.
One of the largest Roman excavations (still going on) is a large open-air museum and especially known for its well-preserved mosaic floors. Also really funny, and not only for kids is "Portugal dos Pequenitos" Here you can see all the cultures of Portugal and his past in a park, at a small scale.
For all these trips we have detailed directions with tips so you do not have disappointments of closed museums, not available transport. So every trip is a well-spent day.
If desired, guided trips can be arranged.
